Switching from Sony to Fujifilm

Updated: 3 days ago

A while ago now I officially waved goodbye to my faithful Sony gear. There are many things that I loved about my Sony gear however there are also things that really frustrate me about it as well and stop me from actively wanting to pick up my camera and take pictures. Another reason to change was purely financial. I knew that I could sell my Sony gear buy a Fujifilm X-S10 and gain a little extra in the bank balance. I took such a long time to make the decision to sell my A7Riii and all my lenses and buy a Fujifilm X-S10 because in my mind it would have been a big downgrade. Moving from a camera with a full frame 42mp sensor to a camera with a 26mp APS-C sensor. Also selling some lenses that I loved, such as my 85mm f1.8 which was SO good considering the price; also my 90mm f2.8 macro lens, which was razor sharp. Along with this was the possibility of using fantastic 3rd party lenses like Tamron and Sigma. Check out my previous blog of what's in my camera bag when I used Sony.

It was actually Sigma that made me pull the trigger on it. Their announcement of some prime lenses, particularly their 56mm F1.4 that brought me ever closer to making my decision. I waited for some reviews of the lens from some reviewers that I trust the opinion of and all the pictures I was seeing looked like it produced sharp images, good auto focus responsiveness, with some good bokeh.

I bought the X-S10 with the 16-80 f4 as a bundle and also purchased 80mm f2.8 macro. A short while after that, I bought that Sigma 56mm F1.4 and the Sigma 30mm F1.4. I use the 16-80 as my general lens for landscapes and travel photography when I go away. The two Sigma lenses serve as fantastic portrait lenses. Then the macro lens for my usual macro photography.

After using the Fujifilm for an extended period of time now, I can tell you that I don't know why I waited so long. After looking at the quality of the pictures I actually now don't really see it as a downgrade, just a swap. The 80mm F2.8 is just as sharp as my Sony macro lens and I feel like it focuses faster, which was my main gripe with the Sony 90mm macro. The quality of the images are fantastic. I get wonderful shallow depth of field from the Sigma lenses which match my Sony lenses. I did like that the Sony 85mm F1.8 was quite light along with the quality, well the Sigma 56mm F1.4 (which is the equivalent focal length on APS-C) is even lighter and still has great quality. The 16-80 F4 is such a great focal length and is pretty light, especially compared to a full frame equivalent lens. When doing landscapes or travel I'm not bothered about super shallow depth of field or anything so the F4 doesn't bother me in the slightest. You can still get good bokeh from this lens if used in the right way. The Sigma 30mm F1.4 is a nice addition as well.

So I honestly can say I don't miss Sony as they just don't suit my paired back needs anymore. They are fantastic cameras but just too much camera for me at the moment. I'll put up a few photos for you to see what I have taken photos of with my Fujifilm X-S10 so far.

Thanks for reading and see you again soon.
